The 2013 Calendar: '78 Fairies'
This series of paintings (and two drawings) were for my 2013 calendar. It started with a very simple idea: one fairy for January, two for February, three for March... and so on. A very simple idea, but a quick calculation will reveal that the entire year adds up to an impressive total of 78 fairies... It took a bit of doing.
The first compositions simply worked with idea of the requisite number of fairies, in particular there was March, where I used the idea of the Three Wise Monkeys (hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.). As the numbers mounted up the seasons began to influence the compositions as well: a harvest moon in September, a pumpkin in October, fireworks in November, and finally a complex and slightly insane arrangement of 12 fairies all joined in a circle by the Christmas crackers that they are all holding.
Clicking the thumbnails above will take you to the individual paintings. The one odd one out is the single fairy with the Rubik's Cube that had the place of January: This is a painting I had done a couple of years before, but as time was running short and he fitted in so nicely I thought he would do very well.
